Modern root canal therapy is a virtually painless procedure that saves your natural tooth from extraction — and relieves the throbbing pain of an infected tooth fast. Our experienced team makes the process smooth, efficient, and far less daunting than its reputation suggests.
SAVE YOUR TOOTH
Root canal therapy treats infection deep inside the tooth — in the pulp chamber and root canals. Left untreated, a dental infection can spread to the jaw, neck, and beyond. Root canal therapy stops the infection, eliminates the pain, and preserves your natural tooth for years to come.
Thanks to modern anesthetics and rotary instruments, today's root canal procedure feels little different from getting a filling. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the experience actually is.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
These warning signs indicate the dental pulp may be infected or damaged and should be evaluated as soon as possible.
Persistent, throbbing pain that doesn't go away — especially pain that worsens when lying down or at night — often signals pulp infection.
Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers for 30+ seconds after the source is removed is a classic sign of pulp inflammation.
Swelling, tenderness, or a pimple-like bump on the gums near a tooth can indicate an abscess forming at the root tip.
A tooth that has turned gray or dark often has a damaged pulp — even without obvious pain. X-rays and testing will confirm whether treatment is needed.
A cavity that has reached the innermost pulp layer requires root canal treatment to clean out the infection before a crown can be placed.
A crack that extends into the pulp allows bacteria to enter and infect the nerve, making root canal therapy necessary to save the tooth.
THE PROCEDURE
After thoroughly numbing the area, we create a small opening in the tooth to access the pulp chamber. Using specialized rotary instruments, we carefully remove the infected pulp tissue, shape the canals, and clean them with an antimicrobial solution.
The cleaned canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed. A temporary filling protects the tooth until your custom crown is ready — usually within two weeks.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Answers to the questions we hear most from patients in Hawthorne and across the South Bay.
With modern anesthesia, a root canal procedure itself is not painful. You may feel pressure and vibration, but not sharp pain. Most patients say it feels similar to getting a filling. Any soreness afterward is mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Most root canals are completed in one to two appointments. The first appointment cleans and fills the canals. A follow-up appointment places the permanent crown to restore the tooth's full strength and protect it long-term.
In most cases, no. Keeping your natural tooth is always preferable. An extracted tooth must be replaced with an implant or bridge, which costs more and requires additional procedures. Root canal therapy saves the original tooth at a lower total cost.
A properly treated and crowned root canal tooth can last a lifetime with good oral hygiene and regular checkups. Success rates for root canal therapy consistently exceed 95%.
Stick to soft foods for the first 24–48 hours — yogurt, soup, eggs, and pasta are ideal. Avoid chewing on the treated side until your permanent crown is placed to protect the tooth.
Most PPO dental plans cover a portion of root canal therapy. Coverage varies by plan and tooth type (front vs. back). We'll check your benefits and provide a clear estimate before treatment begins.
Dental infections don't resolve on their own. The sooner you're treated, the faster the pain is gone and the better the outcome. Same-day appointments available.
